MARCH ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to KRISSY ROMANUS our March Athlete of the Month here at CrossFit Big Rock!

Krissy’s CrossFit story started with a Gift Certificate from her husband. Krissy’s hubby came in one day, bragging about what a cool wife he had and how he knew she’d love CrossFit. Boy was he right!

Krissy came in early January this year ready for the challenge. She walked in with that beaming sweet contagious smile and never looked back. Krissy continues to walk through our door with that same go get it attitude and that same beautiful smile each week.

“She simply lights up a room.”
“Class is always more fun when Krissy is there next to you!”
“Love how hard she works to learn new things.”
“Krissy is awesome! Her attitude lights other people up and her work ethic is top notch!”

Krissy answered a few questions for us…

What brought you in to CrossFit?
Curiosity, really.  I had heard great things about it and was very interested and very intimidated.  Talked about joining for months and months, and just kept talking…My husband actually had to sign me up to get my going and stop talking about it. So glad he did!  All of the CFBR folks are great!

Did you play sports growing up?
Yep!  Let’s see…Soccer, softball, then equestrian.

What motivates you to learn a new move?
The challenge.  Well, actually the coaches. I wouldn’t do half the things I do now if you guys hadn’t had the confidence in me.  I also enjoy watching all of the WODers – they all have such determination – and that is motivating.

Are you a traveler?  If so, what is your favorite vacation spot?
Traveled a lot growing up – military family.  SO – now in my older years, I don’t have the same travel bug as many people.  We have a cabin out by Chelan that I really enjoy.

Favorite quote?
I have a favorite word…. “TIME

FEBRUARY 2017 ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Our February Athlete of the Month is Mr. Travis Fulton. Travis joined us when we first opened in May, 2015. He started coming into workout two times a week. But man that didn’t last long. He was instantly hooked, and that drive of his quickly increased pulling him into the box more and more frequently. If Travis didn’t have to travel for work, I think we’d see him almost everyday! What’s cool is this new passion of his pulls him into dropping-in on CrossFit boxes around the map. So cool! We thoroughly enjoy having Travis here at Big Rock. He’s extremely supportive of the members working out next to him. He’s constantly cheering them on. You can count on a good story, a good joke or a good whole-hearted laugh when Travis walks through the door. If you know Travis, you know how he works. He works hard. Travis has this energy that just doesn’t stop, it’s contagious. And Travis, we thank you for sharing it with us at CrossFit Big Rock!
What brought you to CrossFit?  Curiosity – and then I was so bad at it ,  I had to come back and learn.
What is the biggest change you have noticed since coming?  I’m stronger than I’ve ever been ,  and while we like to share our aches and pains,  I actually have fewer pains than I did when I started.

What has been your biggest challenge?  The olympic lifting.  Technique is so important and I still struggle to get the movements right.

You have such a strong work ethic. Did you play sports in school?  Thanks,  I played soccer and raced bikes as a kid.  I’m competitive and stubborn.

Do you have a favorite song?  Changes all the time,  right now my go-to is probably “Toes” by Zac Brown Band

What about a dream vacation?  A month in the mountains

And best quote?    Res Firma Mitescere Nescit  –  Literally “a firm resolve never falters”

JANUARY 2017 ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Meet Dan Wallace our January Athlete of the Month

img_3599

No doubt about why this guy is our athlete of the month.  He comes early, works really hard and is willing to give it his all.
Thanks Dan for always having such a positive attitude and great work ethic.

We had a chance to ask Dan a couple of questions…

What got you started at CrossFit Big Rock?
My older brother Ron has been doing Crossfit for years and I always thought the workouts sounded TOUGH but fun. I tried Cindy in Oct of 2011 and got humbled really quick. Fast forward to 2015 when Andrew McKenzie mentioned I should come check it out when CFBR was preparing for the grand opening. The box is less than a mile a way from my home and now is a part of my life! 🙂 Thanks Andrew!
What drives you to keep working you hard?
CrossFit has changed my life in so many ways. I’ve positively changed the way I sleep, eat, and train plus I’ve made so many new friends that my entire outlook on everything has made a huge improvement. Every rep in every workout provides real time feedback on progress, so usually I know what needs some work and can gauge what is getting “easier”. I log all my lifts after every workout and like to see the gains (sometimes the dips) in progress.
What is your favorite vacation?
Anytime I can be on the beach and in the ocean with my family.
Favorite quote?
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. – Wayne Gretzky
What do you love to see on the whiteboard?
Clean and Jerks, Deadlifts, Bench
What do you dread?
Bar Muscle Ups – because I think I’m close to getting these but haven’t dialed them in yet. 2017 will be the year I figure these out hopefully…
Any advice for someone wanting to try CrossFit out?
Relax. Do your best. Ask questions. Know that every workout will provide equal doses of personal growth and humility.

DECEMBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Kendra Ro is our December Athlete of the Month here at CrossFit Big Rock! Congratulations Kendra! Well deserved!

kendra

Kendra is one of our original “Basics” class members. She started out attending our first round of Basics classes in January of this year. She came to the first class smiling and continues to smile each time she walks through the front door. Her attitude is contagious. You can’t help but smile yourself and cheer up when you’re around her. Even when you’re working out! On top of this gal having such a positive attitude she has a strong focus as well. Our Coaches are always impressed with Kendra’s strength and determination. “She is always willing to push herself through a workout no matter how hard it is!” Kendra is also one of our most consistent athletes, WOD’ing weekly at her favorite 7:00pm classes.

We are so thankful for you Kendra and appreciate you. And proud to have you apart of our CrossFit Big Rock family!

What got you to walk into CrossFit Big Rock for the first time?
I saw the ad for two weeks for free.  I just had to go and see what it was all about.  I was very nervous and had no idea what to expect.

What keeps you coming back for more?
It’s never the same workout twice.  It’s always challenging.

Tell us your most favorite movement in a CrossFit WOD and what is your least favorite?
My most favorite movements would be KBS and Deadlifts.  My least favorite is lunges, I know some people might think it’s burpees.

What keeps you busy outside the CrossFit box?
Work always keeps me busy, but during the spring and summer I love to work in the yard and garden.

What’s your favorite food?
I love pasta and milk chocolate.

NOVEMBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

November Athlete of the Month – Michael Doran
untitled

Michael has been amazing us since the beginning. He has a strong work ethic and always comes in with a smile. Michael puts in a lot of effort on a very regular basis. His consistency and dedication pay off. You will often see a “PR” next to his lifts and fast WOD times! And he does this all with great attention to performing movements correctly. Speaking of movements… he’s worked hard over the years and is always improving and learning something new.
Can’t wait to see what he masters next!

You are a dedicated athlete. What keeps you motivated to keep at it?
CrossFit has helped me feel the healthiest and strongest I’ve ever been. I feel pride in my body’s ability and consistent training is what supports that. It is also great to be able to eat burgers with impunity.

What’s your favorite CrossFit move?
I really enjoy overhead squats. They are a difficult movement that requires a particular blend of strength, balance, and flexibility.

What’s your least favorite move?
I prefer not to ride the Assault Air Bike, when possible.

Outside of CrossFit, do you have a favorite hobby?
I am a professional cello, violin, and viola maker. My work is my passion and CrossFit gets me to clock out. For a vacation from work, I once made a mandolin for myself.

Would you share something we may not know about you?
I’m a good cook, I love restoring old woodworking machines, and I can make fire without matches or a lighter.

OCTOBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Robin Johnson is our Athlete of the Month for October.

img_6198

This is no surprise to anyone, this girl deserves some recognition!

Robin has been faithfully attending our 5:30am classes since the new year. She walks in every morning with a huge smile on her face, the most positive attitude you could ask for (at 5:30 in the morning), and such a go-get-it attitude. She is super welcoming to anyone who walks through our doors. She is always cheering on and motivating her fellow early-risers during and post workouts. Partnering with Robin in a workout is the best, you couldn’t ask for a more supportive partner.

Each WOD Robin tackles head-on. She doesn’t cherry pick, she doesn’t hit the snooze button in the morning to avoid her less than favorite movements or lifts.
What she does do, is get after it! The changes and improvements this woman has made is amazing! And she continues to amaze us coaches and the Big Rock members around her.
She is always looking to improve, go a little faster, lift a little heavier. And yes Robin, with your growing strength and determination,  your day will come when you get those pull ups mastered!

Robin’s CrossFit journey…

What do you do for fun?
I enjoy spending time with my family, working on any of the numerous projects around our home, baking, fishing, and the occasional girl’s night out.

When did you start at CrossFit Big Rock?
After much convincing by my husband, who insisted I would love CrossFit, my first day at the box was the 0530 class on January 12, 2016.

What is the biggest change you have noticed since coming?
Beside the inches lost, and the muscle gained?  The next best thing, I am a much happier person.

Do you have a short term goal for your CrossFit self?
To nail pull-ups!

If you could make up your own workout, what would it be?
This is a tough one but I’d definitely pick rowing and bench press as the components.

CFBR has been an important addition to my life.  I look forward to the classes, regardless of the WOD, because I know the coaches and members are there as support. Thank you CFBR coaches, members, and my husband for being right.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

This Month our athlete of the month is the hard working Kris Munroe

FullSizeRender (76)

How long have you been at this CrossFit business?
Started at the barn in Carnation in September of 2012.  It’s scary to think back to when I started I remember being very intimidated by all the weight everyone was lifting.  I felt the weakest person around and I was. I could barely lift the bar.  I think I felt physically sick after every workout for the first 2 months.  I can never stop now because I never want to go back to that feeling.

How have you developed into a such ninja?
I started just going two days a week for about 2 years and I progressed very slowly.  The most improvement I have seen has been since I started at CrossFit Big Rock and then jumped it up to going 4-5 times a week.  It really makes a huge difference the more time you put in the more you get out of it.

Where is your favorite place to travel?
Chelan

What is your least favorite move to see on the board?
It used to be almost everything but really the only thing that I hate to see now is thrusters at 95. (Better work on that this year)  Fran brings back those good old sick feelings I used to have.

What is your most favorite?
TTB

What fellow Big Rockers have to say:
“Kris has the most focus and persistence to get through any kind of a WOD of anyone I know and comes out smiling every time.”
“He never gives up!”
“Athlete of the month? Kris of course.”
“Great motivation, working out next to Kris.”

July’s Athlete of the Month is Mr. Greg Dianich
greg

Question time…
How long have you been at this crazy business of CrossFit?
Started CrossFit about 5 years ago.
We have seen the numbers you put up. Wow! What keeps you going strong?
For me CrossFit is a fun family of friends who encourage strength.
What did you do prior to your life as Super Dad?
I used to be a commercial photographer then a contractor and now a stay at home, yarn shop owning, sheep farming dad who a few times a week likes to lift heavy sh!t!
Any advice for newcomers?
Listen to your body because if you’re injured working out sucks!
Giddyup!

Here is what fellow Big Rockers have said about Greg:
“One of the nicest guys you will meet”.
“He works so hard, his sweat sweats”.
“Seriously, strong”.
“Any man that brings his own cry towel is not someone I want to #*%^ with”.
“Always works hard, always challenging himself, always thinking of everyone else, and always by the front door. Love working out with him”.
